1888 RABBI JACOB JOSEPH (1840-1902) (Lithuania-USA)
Arrived in New York to become the official chief Rabbi of the orthodox community. Joseph had studied with Israel Salanter and Hersh Leib Berlin (Netziv) at the Volozhin Yeshiva. Joseph (1840-1902) was a European traditionalist and unlike many other orthodox Rabbis in the US, he did not have any formal secular education. He fought to establish one authority for education and Kashrut (dietary laws).
