442 JOSE (MOSES OF CRETE)
Proclaimed himself the new Moses and predicted that on a certain day the sea would open and the Jewish people would walk on dry land to Eretz Israel. On the given day he and many of his followers dutifully jumped off a low cliff into the sea. The sea didn't split and he couldn't swim. Rav Ashi cautioned against exaggerated enthusiasm at the imminent coming of the messiah.
