1882 January 21, BILU MOVEMENT (Ukraine-Eretz Israel)
As a result of the pogroms of the previous year, the Russian students at the University of Khrakov formed their own pioneering
Zionist group called BILU, for Beit Ya'akov Lekhu Ve-nelkha (House of Jacob Let Us
Rise and Go) (Isaiah 2:5). Led by Israel Belkind, it called for active colonialization of Eretz Israel. The BILU aspired to both a political-economic, as well as spiritual-national
revival ("de retablir la situation").
