American poet whose poem "New Colossus" is inscribed on the Statue of Liberty. She wrote many poems about the problems facing the Jews all over the world. In 1882 she wrote a series of open letters in the journal American Hebrew, called “Epistle to the Hebrewsâ€, calling for American Jews to help establish a Jewish state. The following year she went to London, with letters of introduction from Henry James in an effort to put forth the idea of establishing a Jewish national homeland.
